The concept of work and occupation can be elaborately explained, endlessly. Today’s employment and profession scenario is deeply integrated to the economy and sociology of our world. In fact the development of professions and its gross output, is the backbone of today’s life and living. Again, to validate development with regard to working; these have to be seen from the civilization development perspective. Today we are compelled to work for our food and living. In fact we have to get ourselves educated so that we can perform our work better. Some among us literally toil to keep themselves alive while some make others toil, as part of their work.
An irony of human life is that every profession of today, irrespective of its importance, role, sector, location etc., has evolved in direct response to improving our life on this earth; ultimately destroying the earth. Professions kept evolving as and when need arose. The professions of barber, tailor, cobbler, carpenter, cook etc developed with time. With the gradual demand for increased needs, newer professions like automobile maker, automobile seller, automobile mechanic, road maker, etc. developed too. As population increased over the centuries, these professions kept expanding in response to the needs. It was soon time for specialization. The tailor became a child dress specialist, men’s specialist, suit specialist, casual wear specialist etc.. In every way the evolution of professions was directly intended to provide better living for man. Thus professions like a Mars-exploring NASA scientist, a flair bar tender, a lingerie designer, a nuclear arsenal specialist were all intended to make life better.
The earth that cradled our development had never required us of any work to sustain us. In fact, there was a time when man didn’t even cultivate vegetables and fruits. We only had to find them, eat and sleep. The exorbitantly priced, well-packed fruits and vegetables of today were always in plenty around. It’s a pity that most of us would find it hard to believe that we once lived like that. The need to work to feed our dependents and ourselves, is a clear breach of fundamental human values. Work and work competition is increasingly getting out of hand. We don’t have the time to cherish our life. Twenty-four hours a day is just not enough to get things done for that day, and we are only moving further, the same way.
One of the main drivers of the work phenomenon and thus advancement is the ‘porn-effect’ typical of mankind. Most modern psychologists and researchers have profiled porn addicts as those who get increasingly addicted to porn. The porn addicts always seek a more explicit and higher level of content. The same level of content is no longer satisfying. However, little do these researchers realize that this phenomenon of increasing urge, a characteristic of mankind and not just pornography. For instance, a man who seeks spicy food would seek increasingly spicy foods. In every sphere, people want to keep progressing, driven by a desire to have more. This is the ‘porn-effect’, which persisted, and continues to persist through the evolution of occupations.
Summing up, professions evolved to provide us a better life, which ironically had brought us to a state where our survival itself became debatable. These professions, which originally intended to increase mutual comfort, security and health, have today become necessary for food and survival. Working for food is an infringement of our birthright, which again emphasizes the fact that we have followed the ‘wrong-steps’.
